Berlin

Berlin is the city of music: Key figures are approximately 1,450 companies, including 159 music publishers, 126 recording studios, 77 concert organizers, a sales volume with around € 1.9 billion and over 13,312 people working in this field. Among these are the top-selling companies in the industry: Universal Music, BMG Rights Management and Deutsche Entertainment AG (DEAG). Music colleges and universities such as the Academy of Music (“Hanns Eisler”) and the University of the Arts (Universität der Künste) the Berlin Philharmonic (Berliner Philharmonie) are located in the capital as well as the Federal Association Music Industry (BMVI), GEMA, GVL, GVU and networks like the VUT – just to name a few. Berlin has more than 250 venues and more than 77 concert organizers, a large club scene and many festivals, e.g. Pop-Kultur, Lollapalooza, Club Transmediale, Musikfest, JazzFest and MaerzMusik, Classic Open Air, young.euro.classic, popdeurope, Carnival of Cultures (Karneval der Kulturen) and Fête de la Musique. With the Musicboard Berlin, Berlin is home to a unique funding institution that supports and strengthens the Berlin pop music scene and local musicians.

On behalf of the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, the Berlin Music Commission and Clubcommission Berlin have been developing innovative projects since 2015, such as the Hybrid Music Lab, Stadt nach Acht and Most Wanted: Music, as well as projects for professionalisation and the internationalisation program Music Ambassador.
And last but not least, the Berlin music industry is characterised by a distinct combination of value-added-steps, networking with other creative industries and a strong international orientation.

Why Music cities network?

Maureen Noe Music Board Berlin
"
"For me, being part of the MCN means tackling the complex issues and challenges of a music city together. The knowledge in the network is extremely high and as a member we benefit greatly from the multi-layered perspectives and creative approaches of the partner cities.  These are not only exchanged in the MCN, but also jointly developed in concrete, transnational projects.“
